The opening of Aura Hair Studio and Boutique came on the heels of a 14-year journey in the beauty business. As a little girl, all my barbies had haircuts and I spent countless hours dressing up my little sister in between making mud pies in the yard! Here`s my story:

I graduated from Paris II beauty school in May of 1997. In July of 1997, at the age of 18, I had graduated beauty school and began working as an assistant for Richard DeLozier at Naturally Salon and Day Spa in Crown Center. The knowledge I gained in those first six months working directly beside him 40 hours a week was an excellent start to a successful career. I learned so much from Richard and will always credit him, as my mentor, for making me the stylist I am today. Without this part of my journey I would not be where I am today.  Working at Naturally Salon and Day Spa provided many fun opportunities as well as giving me a strong basis of hair color and cutting skills.

I spent 3 seasons working with the Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleaders. You would find me either in the tunnel at Arrowhead Stadium or on the field for almost all home games. Working with Richard, we were present for the whole process for the ladies. From tryouts to playoffs, our job was to help the ladies look their best. It was a wonderful and very fun opportunity.

I also had the privilege of being sent to the Hyatt the morning of Derrick Thomas` funeral. Hank Williams Jr. was speaking at the funeral and needed some assistance with his hair. I was a goofy 19 or 20 year old at the time, but I was able to get him taken care of.....without looking too nervous.....I hope!!!

I stayed at Naturally for 3 years. I then decided I would like to be a little closer to home.

In March of

2000 I moved to St. Martin Salon and Day Spa in downtown Parkville. St. Martin Salon was a hip little boutique salon right on Main Street that brought style and flair to a thriving historic town. During my time at St. Martin Salon, I took the opportunity to become an educator for Prive` product line. I was sent to Carlsbad, California, for training on public speaking, as well as more training on haircutting techniques and product knowledge. I traveled almost weekly to many salons in Texas to teach classes. This allowed me the chance to meet many salon owners and see many different styles of salons, as well as sharpening my people skills. If I wasn`t shy before, I really wasn`t shy now!

After two years at St. Martin Salon, the salon owner, Alan Martin, tragically passed away of cancer. I very much enjoyed my time at St. Martin. We were a family. But, dynamics changed after his passing and I knew it was time to move forward.

As things typically do in my life, opportunity came a` knocking. And, of course, I answered with open arms!!
In August of 2002, I opened Zen Salon at I-29 and Tiffany Springs Parkway. I dove in head first to my first business (at the ripe old age of 23) and lost some hair due to stress along the way! After my five-year lease expired,  I decided I loved what I was doing but the location was all wrong. I was able to maintain my business and take good care of my clients; however, growing in this spot was a challenge. I closed the doors in August of `07.

My next journey led me to Salon 152 at 152 and N. Oak Trafficway. I rented a station for a couple of years. I worked with about 40 other stylists. It was great getting to know some new people and watch how they did hair and managed their business. I knew it was a short term fix, and that I would find my niche when the time was right.

In February of 2010 I joined the team at Revue Salon and Spa in Zona Rosa. Itching for a change, I made a fast leap. I enjoyed working there but about 6 weeks in, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt I was more "leader" than "follower".  For the first time since 2002, I was an employee. ......yikes!!  However, in my small amount of time working with Marty Serroque, he introduced me to the world of fashion shows and photo shoots. I worked with him on many Evil Pawn Jewelry projects. It was a fun spin on hair and make up, and yet another great learning experience.

One snowy March Sunday in 2010 I rolled back through my old stomping grounds in Parkville and found a gorgeous little space down by the river. I walked into the building and it felt "right".

I had to have a little chat with myself. In this business, your measure of success is generally gauged by the number of stylists you have working for you. My clients told me constantly "I miss your little place Zen"!! My clients were giving me my answer all along! I just didn`t see it. I realized that MY success didn`t mean I had to have 20 stylists and a salon and spa in the hippest place in town. MY success was what made me and my clients happy!!

So in May of 2010 Aura Hair Studio and Boutique was born. Always having a passion for fashion, this space allowed me to live out another life long dream! I added a little clothing and accessory boutique to my shop. This is what I`ve been waiting for. All my experiences and challenges brought me to this gorgeous little place. In March of 2011, I expanded my boutique into the space next door to me taking my 800 square foot "studio" to a  1200 square foot shopping destination.

Opportunity never stops knocking......and January of 2012 brought on yet another expansion!

Now a full-fledged salon of 7 stylists and a boutique full of apparel and accessories is what you will find when you enter AURA!

Since opening my shop, I have traveled to Hollywood to do hair and make up for Evil Pawn Jewelry and have been fashion editor for Home in the Northland Magazine since september of 2011.

I was mentioned in "the Knot" magazine for a bridal updo in 2012.

Aura hosted its first fashion show to benefit the Global Orphan Project last year, and we look forward to an even bigger and better fashion show this year!

Aura was named "best in the northland" by the Kearney, Liberty and Gladstone newspapers in 2012!

I will always continue to grow and strive to be the best. I love my clients and feel privileged that most have been with me for a decade or more. I think they`re glad I`m in a place I will stay for years to come.

I can`t wait to see what`s around the bend...........
